The first step conversion of methanol, ethanol and its ethers using a heterogeneous acidic catalysts is reviewed. The most probable reactions bused on thermodynamic parameters of the reactants are presented. The methanol conversion reaction is exothermic for temperature of 700 K. A number of hypothetical mechanisms have been assumed. We propose a consecutive formation protonated species of the reactants, then undergo water or hydroxonium ion elimination to form free radicals and olefins. Kinetic studies of catalytic conversion of methanol and ethanol has been carried out. Kinetic models of these reactions have been derived.
