Among the presently actively investigated crown ether compounds are crownated thiophenes and benzothiazoles. Ionophoric crown ethers are capable of considerably changing electronic and optical characteristics of an entire coupled system, which makes it possible to use them as optical sensors for metal cations and ammonia ions. The latter offer wide range of possibilities for fine tuning the photochemical properties of supramolecules since the assortment of ammonium compounds is much larger compared to inorganic substrates.
