A number of spectrophotometric tests have facilitated a closer study of the influence chitosan can have over the Fe(III) complexing process in presence of the tiron reagent in the analyzed solutions. We established the stoichiometric composition of the Fe(III): Tr complex which is formed in presence of chitosan. We also found an explanation for the mechanism behind the modification of tiron by chitosan. A new sensitive method of spectrophotometric determination of iron 51 in water was proposed, based on the chemical analytical system Fe(III) – chitosan – tiron. The method was tested in the course of analysis of natural, domestic and sewage waters.
