Series of (Ru-Ni)/C catalysts of different composition were studied in the reaction of electrochemical oxidation of alcohols in alkaline media. The catalysts were devised for use in anodes of alkaline direct alcohol fuel cells (ADAFC). The catalysts were synthesized using carbon supports of different BET surface area. Activity of the ethanol oxidation catalysts increased with the increase of the surface area of the carbon support. The maximum activity of the (Ru-Ni)/C catalysts was attained at Ru/Ni=2. The free breathing alkaline direct ethanol fuel cell was tested using RuNi/C catalyst at the anode and oxygen reduction catalyst, which was prepared by pyrolysis of Cobalt tetramethoxyphenylporphyrin supported on XC72 carbon. At 40oC the maximum cell power density 34 mW cm-2 was reached at U=0.4 V.
